Ingredients

1/2 cup butter

1 cup sugar

1 egg

1/4 cup milk

1/4 teaspoon vanilla

Approximately 3 cups flour

2 teaspoons baking powder

Icing, recipe follows

Silver balls

Gold balls

Icing:

2 tablespoons egg whites*

2 cups powdered sugar

Red food coloring

Directions

Cream the butter. Add the sugar and mix well. Add the egg, milk and vanilla and combine. Sift together 1 cup of the flour with the baking powder and mix it into the batter. Add some or all of the additional flour depending on how much the dough can handle. Form into a disk, cover in plastic and chill in the refrigerator at least 2 hours. Roll out on a lightly floured surface about 1/4-inch thick. Cut out hearts with various sized cookie cutters and place on a greased sheet pan. Bake at 375 degrees F for 8 to 10 minutes until very light golden brown. Let cool on the pan.

Icing: Whisk together the egg whites and powdered sugar to form a slightly loose icing. It should flow a little bit but not too much. Transfer a small amount to a separate bowl and add a tiny amount of red food coloring to make pink icing. Pipe a rim of pink icing around the edge of the cookie and then fill in the center with white icing, or just pipe decorative designs on the surface. Embellish with silver or gold balls. Let dry and package up in cello bags tied with a ribbon.

Make Valentine's Day for your kids even sweeter with our easy cookie recipe!

2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour

1 tsp. baking soda

1/2 tsp. baking powder

1 cup butter, softened

1 1/2 cups white sugar

1 egg

1 tsp. vanilla extract

Red sugar sprinkles

Red Hot candies

Step 1

Preheat oven to 375掳F (190掳C). In a small bowl, kids can help stir together flour, baking soda, and baking powder. Set aside.

Step 2

In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until it is smooth. (Parents may want to start this step and let kids finish.) Beat in the egg and vanilla. Have kids gradually add in the dry ingredients while you are mixing.

Step 3

Show kids how to roll rounded teaspoonfuls of dough into balls and place them onto ungreased cookie sheets. Bake 8 to 10 minutes or until golden. Let the cookies stand two minutes before removing them from the cookie sheets to cool on wire racks.

Step 4

When the cookies have cooled, it's time to start decorating! We brushed on red and white Valentine Cookie Icing using craft brushes, added - candies, and sprinkled on red sugar sprinkles.

Step 5

Help kids cut out small folded paper hearts to use as decorating templates. Gently press the heart templates onto the cookies after icing, and then sprinkle on the red sugar sprinkles. Shake off excess sugar before removing the templates. (Parents may need to help remove the heart templates.) Kids can experiment and come up with their own designs to turn their cookies into edible works of art.

I hope you at least have a rolling pin. If not, this might not be the best suggestion this time. You could make some cut out sugar cookies in a heart shape and ice them. I use the two recipes as attached. If you haven't done a lot of baking, here are some tips. Both recipes have comments/reviews from other people that may give you more tips.

Be careful not to overcook these.

Make sure you refrigerate the dough before rolling it out. Otherwise you get a sticky mess.

Sprinkle a little flour over the counter before rolling out the dough, as well as on the rolling pin.

Skip the part about the ';cookie stick'; in the directions unless you want to make the flowers in the picture.

For the icing recipe, this is one that goes on a little lumpy, but smoothes out on its own and actually hardens. You don't need the extract - use vanilla or just skip it.
Chocolate Chip: Simple but classic. ;)

2 sticks butter, softened

1/2 tsp vanilla

1/2 tsp baking soda

3/4 c brown sugar

3/4 c sugar

2 eggs

2-1/2 c flour

1 pkg chocolate chips (semi sweet or milk chocolate, your choice)

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In large bowl, combine butter, vanilla and baking soda. Add sugars and eggs, mix well. Slowly add flour to mixture. Finally, add the chocolate chips. Spoon out onto baking sheet (need not be greased). Bake 8-10 minutes or until edges of cookies are golden.

Best wishes. Happy V day!
